DVD stands for Digital Versitale Disc...

This Disc can be used for multible purposes like Movie's, Music and Data. This disc is the Successor of the LaserDisc's, CD-Rom's and   VHS Tape's.  One of the advantage is that the quality is much beter and it has a maximum data capacity of 17GB on 1 disc. LaserDisc is much better you say, well yes, in terms of the Sound it was beter, but unfortunately LaserDisc is no longer a standard in the Movie industrie. DVD however is still pushing foreward with it's technologies and is getting better and better...

Some other examples are:

There is a possibility to program Security Codes on most of the DVD Players to block the playfunction of DVD's with movies not suitable for children... (Parental lock)

Because the Capacity of this Disc is much bigger than other mediums, there is an option for multiple camera positions for one movie. This way you can select the preferred shot...

The Possibility for more than one language is also provided because of the bigger Disc Capacity...

PlayStation 2 is a great example of the use of DVD for Games. You no longer have to change the disc when you are halfway in a game, nothing is more annoying than the message "PLEASE INSERT DISC #2" when you finnaly figured out a game...:o(
