 Storyline:
The film tells the story of a small-town policeman, 42 year old Ma Shan (Wen), who simply wakes up one morning after a fitful night of sleep to discover that his gun is missing. In China, where guns are extremely rare, this is serious business - the law says that an official who loses his gun can be sent to prison for up to three years. Ma Shan's first thought is that he must have lost the gun at the wedding of a cousin he attended the previous evening. But a visit to the cousin and her new husband produces only the information that everyone - including Ma Shan - was so drunk that no one can remember anything. Nevertheless, Ma Shan begins to track down the people he sat close to at the wedding, hoping that one of them accidentally picked up the gun. But Ma Shan fears the gun's absence is not so accidental - and that whoever has it plans to use it. First on the list is Zhou Xiaogang, the richest man in the town as a result of some shady businesses, and also the brother of a soldier who died while fighting alongside Ma Shan in China's war with Vietnam in 1979. On his way to Zhou's house, Ma Shan begins to discover that things are suddenly not all they seemed to be in his town. A man he remembers distinctly as a bricklayer has become a noodle seller - and says he's always plied that trade. Even more disconcerting, when he reaches Zhou's house, his knock on the door is answered by Li Xiaomeng (Ning Jing), Ma Shan's first love, who still haunts his dreams but hasn't been in town for years. Later, on the street, Ma Shan tracks down Zhou Xiaogang, who's now driving the fanciest car in town and dressing like an international businessman. Ma Shan roughs him up a bit but Zhou Xiaogang insists he doesn't have the The Missing Gun. But things take a sinister turn the following night when Li Xiaomeng turns up dead and the bullet appears to be from Ma Shan's gun. Ma Shan is arrested for murder. Under intense interrogation Ma Shan is able to turn the tables on his accusers and convince them that the murder may be Zhou Xiaogang's work. But after Zhou is arrested, Ma Shan begins to reconsider whether Zhou is guilty. He begins to lay a trap for the real killer which will prove to be just as dangerous for Ma Shan as it is for the criminal…
